Helping Tommy’s drive change in workplace pregnancy and parenting support
What we did
Tommy's wanted to better understand the realities of pregnancy, baby loss and returning to work after becoming a parent, and the role employers play during some of life’s most significant and challenging moments.
Think Stylist designed and delivered a large-scale research programme, capturing the experiences of more than 1,000 people across the UK utilising the Think Stylist database and Tommy’s own connections. By exploring workplace culture, policies and support systems, we identified where employers are getting it right, where support is falling short, and the impact this can have on wellbeing, confidence and retention.
What we delivered
Working in close partnership with Tommy’s, we analysed the findings and produced Bumped Out, a landmark report exploring pregnancy, baby loss and parenthood in the workplace.
Combining robust data, powerful lived experiences and practical recommendations, the report gave Tommy’s compelling evidence to raise awareness of the issues facing employees and drive meaningful change across UK workplaces.
Impact
The research uncovered stark realities, including that one in 10 women left their job following pregnancy loss or baby loss due to inadequate support, while fewer than half felt well supported when returning to work after having a baby. The findings provided Tommy's with comprehensive evidence to spotlight an often-overlooked issue and strengthen its position as a leading voice on pregnancy and parenting in the workplace.
Tommy’s launched the report through an in-person panel event and a stakeholder webinar, bringing together employers and workplace leaders to discuss the findings. The research also generated national media coverage, including Stylist as part of the Every Loss Counts campaign.
The findings continue to help Tommy’s engage employers, shape workplace conversations and advocate for better support for people navigating pregnancy, loss and parenthood at work
“Think Stylist delivered a high-quality programme of workplace insights research on behalf of Tommy’s. Their team combined a robust research approach with a clear understanding of the challenges facing employers and working parents, resulting in a report that was both evidence-based and practical. The findings have provided Tommy’s with valuable insights to support our engagement with employers and raise awareness of the impact that pregnancy and parenting can have in the workplace.
Throughout the project, the team at Think Stylist demonstrated professionalism, expertise and a collaborative approach. We appreciated their commitment to producing research that combined both quantitative and qualitative data, to fully capture people’s experiences.” Sarah House, Head of Corporate Partnerships, Tommy’s
